Somewhere in Toscana

Last time we visited Italy we went to see Napoli, Amalfi coast, Bari and Matera. So, that were these regions: Campania, Apulia & Basilicata.

This time we decided to go to see Treviso, Venice, Assisi, Foligno, Rome (we haven't been in Rome for more than 10 years), Grosetto, Siena, Lucca, Riomaggiore & Ferrara. These are the regions we visited: Veneto, Umbria, Lazio, Toscana, Liguria & Emilia Romagna. It was around 2000 km drive during 8 days.

It was a huge road trip and we enjoyed every minute of it.

First of all, last time we were in Italy I was pregnant. This time we went with our daughter so this was the first time we went on a road trip as a family.

Like I always say, Italy is a very big country and you haven't seen it if you visited only Rome or Venice or Napoli or Sicily or Genova, etc... You need to come back more than one, two, three times, even more - to actually experience the country. We've visited Italy many times and every time we see sometime new.

One important fact for this trip. I've made a short video (reel on insta) for every town we've visited. So, feel free to check it out.

Also, here’s a video of the whole trip :)

Details of our road trip:

  1. Treviso & Venice

We've been in Treviso few times and every time we enjoy it because the town is beautiful.

This time Treviso was a starting point for Venice because we decided to go there by train.

It is a 30 minutes ride and it's a perfect solution because it is not advisable to go to Venice with a car. We spend more than half a day in Venice and it was amazing. Venice is gorgeous and you need to walk a lot in order to get to know it. Also, one day is not enough if you want to properly experience it but it's enough for the first time there ;) There is no need to say anything except this: Venice is a magical place full of history and cultural significance. Every person should visit it at least once in their lifetime.

2. Assisi & Foligno

After Treviso and Venice we continued with our road trip to Assisi. Assisi is a magical place and I would recommend everyone to visit this small and beautiful town. In the 90s Assisi was ruined by two catastrophic earthquakes but the town was rebuilt and to see how they manage to rebuilt it while preserving many historical and important sites, it's truly mesmerising. ***A tip for parents regarding Assisi, if you have a baby or a toddler, put them in a carrier. Everything goes up and down so the other option is really not an option :D Well, if you ask me, of course.

Foligno is very small but pretty. It's enough to spend few hours there in order to see it properly so, if you want to see both towns, take a whole day or 2 days. Also, Perugia is a beautiful place too but in order to see all of these beautiful places you'll need a couple of days. There are many small and very nice towns nearby but you'll need time to see it all. We decided to visit Assisi & Foligno and we are happy we did it.

3. Rome

Afterwords we proceeded to Rome. We haven't been in Rome for more than 10 years so we really wanted to come back. An interesting fact is that Rome was our very fist trip together, in 2010 :) If you don't count one day trips.

Next day we went to the city centre and we spent a day there. Rome is truly big so one day is not enough to see all of it but if you've been many times, every time you can visit something else. This time we enjoyed a walk through the mesmerising and historical centre, without any hurry. I would recommend going to see the Colosseum, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza del popolo, Piazza Navona, Fontana di Trevi, Piazza Venezia, Pantheon... you can see almost all of it in a short reel I made on my Insta.

The 2nd day there we went to see Gianicolo (amazing viewpoints) with my cousins from Rome. So, we saw Rome from another perspective. Would recommend!

4. Grosseto & Siena

After Rome we proceeded with our road trip and went to Toscana. First, we went to Grosseto, which is a small and very peaceful town. We enjoyed a short walk and a very good coffee (like everywhere in Italy) and continued with our drive.

Siena was our next stop. Well, don't know what else to say than WOW. The main square.. the streets... the colours.. go and see it! That's it. Also, there is a lot of parking lots and a day there is enough.

5. Lucca

Lucca is a very nice town. The most beautiful part of it, for me, is Piazza Anfiteatro.. it is really interesting and very beautiful. We spent the night there so we went for a long evening walk through the town and went to bed pretty tired.

6. Riomaggiore

Next day we went out of Toscana and entered Liguria in order to visit Riomaggiore which is a part of the famous Cinque Terre. We were with our car so we decided to see only Riomaggiore and we spend few hours there. Those are truly magical places and if you want to go there, make sure to leave your car in Spezia and go to see all of the five towns by train.

This time we decided to see only R but there will be next time ;)

7. Ferrara

The 10th and last stop on our beautiful road trip was Ferrara. Ferrara is located in Emilia Romagna and I would recommend to everyone to visit this gorgeous town. It is enough to spend a day there, the centre is not big. However, there is something special about that town. Also, there are a lot of restaurants & bars. But really, where in Italy is that not a case? :D

If I can be honest, I feel like I've been eating all day every day for the whole trip.

Italy, forever close to my heart.

To sum it up, go and see it all. The country is big and it's worth it. It really is.
